Greetings from DC part deux

Just a quick update on the nanny - wow supernanny indeed. There was a knock on the door at 3 and this rather formidable "traditionally-built" lady was standing there, holding a red book. She proceeded to write down every word that came out of my mouth so she had the full picture by the time I left. Leaving Lucas with her was of course a drama - endless hugs seeking reassurance, dealing with separation anxiety, quivering lower lip - well I was just pathetic. Lucas happily waved "bye mommy" and then turned back to Kim who has busy pulling faces at him.

The talk by Madeleine Albright was inspirational - she is such a good speaker and really made me feel that I was doing something useful with my time at work - trying to open Americans' minds to other countries, languages and cultures. The federal program that my Center is funded under was started during the Cold War (hence the 50th anniversary now) to try and create understanding, compassion, and, most importantly, spies. Dinner was over by 8.30 but as the nanny was on the clock til 9 I hit the bar with a few colleagues, finishing off the evening in style.

Speaking of being finished off - when I got back to the room Kim was hanging on the sofa looking slightly worse for wear while Lucas charged round the room with his tractor and fire engine. "How did it go?", I asked. "He's a busy one", came the panting reply. She's due back in 15 minutes so fingers crossed....
