No birthday parties this week but yesterday morning I had organised a small breakfast party at my friend Jim's house downtown to celebrate the results of the Indian elections. 3 interested people turned up, my friend Mitra who manages to make it down to the Farmers' Market on Saturdays before 7am brought fresh scones. While we searched the news channels in a futile attempt to find in-depth news from beyond the Americas, Lucas switched on the dishwasher, heated up catfood in the microwave and put a packet of biscuits in the washing machine. These and other antics resulted in him being renamed BamBam, Barney and Betty's son in the Flintstones. Very apt!! Miraculously we received an invite to visit again, though Jim did dig out his teenage son's old trainsets so next time Lucas has more suitable entertainment. After this outing Lucas and I went to the library where they have the nice train table, and he managed to play and even occasionally share without screaming 'my choo choo wain' for over an hour. Result. In the afternoon after a lovely long nap we went to the bicycle shop and bought a bicycle rack for the car. My friend Jennifer gave me her vintage Raleigh (with basket!) on Friday, and now I want to be able to transport it places and go for cycle rides. The bike shop is enormous, and while I was struggling with bike rack terminology Lucas had a great time looking around - so many items with wheels! Then he discovered the pinball machine in the corner.... This morning I ordered a kiddie seat for the bike online, and so by next weekend hopefully I can post some pics of us cycling along.
This week we have lots of events - I have an adult birthday dinner tomorrow night so Lucas will spend the evening with Aunt Jane, on Tuesday Lucas has an evening playdate with his friend from daycare, they live about half an hour away so that will be a fun outing, and Thursday my friend Sathyu from Bhopal is visiting Madison while on a US tour to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Union Carbide disaster. (details here: http://bhopal.org). We have organised a radio interview, a film screening with Q&A, and a dinner so it will be busy but I am excited about being able to bring some personal connections to my work. I am sure many students have no idea what happened in Bhopal and so it will be good to create some awareness. Today I am going to put up posters in the Indian shop and our own University Housing Community Center.
