The Supermarket Experience

Sitting in the study/spare bedroom/eventual Lucas's room in our new apartment. Feels very cosy, partly due to the excellent heating system (included in rent so no reason to turn it down - apart from global warming of course but I must admit that as temperatures again go well below zero fahrenheit that seems a little far removed from my everyday reality) and partly due to all the lovely bits and pieces I had shipped to Madison from London. The boxes finally arrived on Thursday afternoon.

I remain a true Londoner and lock my car just to pop indoors for another layer of clothes. I can 'pop' here by the way, though 'nipping' is unheard of. I regularly astound colleagues by announcing things like "just nipping to the loo", leaving them wondering what on earth I am doing and whether they need to take any action. :-)

So I went for a big shop this afternoon - wow! So much choice and all of it so foreign. I realised how brainwashed I have become to Sainsbury's shelving and labelling. Here I couldn't find anything, the order of the aisles made no sense to me and everything is called something I don't expect it to be. Prices are weird too, organic foods really expensive and even things like rice cakes insanely dear. Settled for a box of donut holes instead :-). (Donut holes are little balls that may or may not have been part of the original donut. Crazy concept but there you go.) Was pleased to find out that coke zero, arguably one of the most poisonous beverages on earth, comes in vanilla flavour. Bought a 24-pack of that too. What the heck. When in Rome...

Lucas and I are going to a bluegrass gig for children tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait! First though - first night in our new place in our brand new beds!! Sweet dreams all, and thanks for logging on.

Lalita, so glad that it is all working out OK. You seem to be passing the settling in milestones quickly and you must be glad to have the independence of your own apartment and car. Our nephew in Seattle has a similar car - a "muscle car" he calls it!

We do remember the supermarket experience you describe - tends to knock one's healthy eating aspirations sideways, but I am sure that it will soon be Sainsbury's which seems eccentically organised.

Very glad that Lucas is settling well in the playgroup - we enjoyed the pictures. Do keep sharing your experiences.

With love from us both

Adrian

It all sounds excellent, Well done you, and well done Lucas for coping with it all. How cool is that. His mum drives a Scooby Imprezza, and there's bluegrass music, doughnut holes, and fizzy drinks. I shall be applying for adoption very soon indeed. Marvellous.

All sounds Fab and Exciting. Subaru Impreza? That's a Boy Racer car in the UK! Glad to see 'Bunny' made it to Madison althoug the snow shows his change of colour! Flat very empty and lonely. Missing both of you loads.
