in which Lalita becomes a soccer mom and Lucas is a hero

Thursday 6pm. I drive up to a local park to meet my fellow soccer moms for the first day of Lucas' new soccer training. His team is called "Starfish". There were about 6 moms, 1 dad and maybe 8 children. There were a host of SUVs parked along the road although in the competitive spirit I am proud to announce there was only 1 other child with shin guards and Lucas was the only child with shin guards sewn into his socks. (No I did not sew them in myself, you can buy them like that - cool or what?). He was totally delighted with his new outfit, including trainers which I bought a size too big so they can last a while. Nevertheless he seemed very small compared to the other kids (some of whom will turn 5 soon) and was definitely the baby of the team. I was amazed how well he did following directions, and not at all amazed that at some point he got fed up with those directions and made off with the football in the direction of the playground. He legged it down the park kicking the ball and the coach had to race after him. When she got back she was howling with laughter and said that once he starts going in the right direction he'll be really good. His first match is tomorrow but the coach and I decided that it'll be a while before Lucas will be fit to play - not before he gets the concept of 'teams', ;don't touch with your hands', and 'stay on the field'.
Yesterday morning I took Lucas to the travel nurse and he was given Hepatitis A and Thyphoid shots. Poor thing did unbelievably well and was most traumatised by the band-aid the nurse put on afterwards. He complained a little bit about his sore little thigh yesterday evening but today he seems fine. I am amazed - what a little trooper he is!
